Question
I am going to be a first time puppy mommy in a few weeks.  I have been trying to do as much research as possible and be as prepared as possible.  My new family member is a pomchi.  How many hours do puppies usually sleep at night and as they get older does the sleep increase or decrease?

Answer
Puppies usually sleep all night, provided they are warm, comfortable, secure and don't need to potty. From around eleven pm to five-six AM . Make sure your baby has a soft, secure crate to sleep in with a toy to keep him comfortable. Because your baby will be tiny, he will need to go out to potty very often. At this age their little bladders are the size of a pea and can't hold very much. Withhold water after 5pm and food after 9pm to help baby make it through the night without needing to go out. Put baby on a firm eating and going out schedule. With a pup this size it is going to seem almost constant at first. A small puppy needs to be fed at least three times per day preferably four smaller meals, as much as it can eat in half an hour or so and then pick up the food.
If you follow the feeding schedule, take puppy out the last time around 11 pm, or as late as you can. Then hopefully baby will let you sleep until five or six in the morning before needing to go out again. Sleep time at night will increase as puppy gets old. During the day , this is an infant that will spend a large amount of time sleeping during the day as well. It is not unusual for baby's to cry for their mommy's and littermates the first few nights until they get used to sleeping alone. Like having an infant be prepared for a few sleepless nights in the beginning. :)
Have fun and enjoy the puppy breath!
