dog and extension cord

Question
Hi,
I have a 9 month old (ish) border collie shepherd mix. She chewed up an extension cord 2 days ago, and the vet helped me $230 worth last night. She said she saw different colored wires up her tailpipe, that we are waiting to pass. She gave her fluids due to dehydration, and advised bread, metamucil and canned dog food until she is back to herself and I find the pieces in the yard. Well, vet is closed, she won't eat the bread anymore, and the metamucil has not shown any progress. I know you don't want to give medical advice, and I got alot last night from the vet- but it is a long time till Monday, and my puppy is still not showing a difference.  Should I try to give sommething else to help her clear her belly? She pooped this morning, but I have not seen any other stool since. No blood, no electrical cord yet. I feel like either I am just being too anxious and need to wait it out, and I feel like I need to do something to help her improve. If you feel like you can't answer this, I understand-I am, however grateful for any ideas. Thanks.

Answer
Hi Jennifer,

I understand your concern. Why do things like this always seem to happen on the weekends, at night?!

First, even though your vet's office is closed at this time, have you tried calling the office? Many times there is an answering service that can contact the vet on call. Even if this doesn't warrant an emergency office visit, if your vet could call you back, you'd feel a lot better having spoken to her.
If there's no way for you to speak with your vet until Monday, look in your yellow pages for a animal hospital with after-hour emergency services. You might be able to just to talk another vet, who could advise (or comfort you) as to what to do next.

Since your dog had a bowel movement this morning,  I'd hazard a guess that her system is working, and there isn't a blockage. That's the big danger here.

Try toasting the bread, it might get her to eat it, lightly buttering the bread or toast might also entice her into eating. Follow your vet's advice regarding the Metamucil and canned foods, even if you haven't seen any results yet.

If your dog is acting normally, and doesn't appear lethargic, is willing to eat and drink, isn't vomiting, and there isn't blood (from either end), then there isn't an emergency, even though the wires haven't come  out yet.

With any luck, tomorrow morning your dog will give you a very special package.

I hope I've been a help.
Best of luck!
Patti
