QUESTION: Currently, she is on Iams Large Breed Proactive, and have been on Iams since getting her about a year ago. She is not on any type of minerals, and yes, she is on leashed walks. I try to prevent her from eating feces as much as I can, but sometimes it is hidden in high grass areas, and when we go for 2 mile or more walks, its so hard to keep her from doing this.
AnswerMost of the time this is just what you say "Bad Habit" But there are a few things that might reduce the urge to do this.
1 give her a vitamin and MINERAL tablet...Sometimes a lack of one mineral can give her a craving she is smelling in the feces.
2 add non fat cottage cheese to her diet and also flaxseed, about half a cup and a teaspoonful of the flaxseed.
3 put her back on iams puppy food for about 3 months
4 make sure you correct her when she does this eating, and correct her when she stops to sniff deeply. I believe she may have a different sniffing when she is hunting feces than when she is looking for a place to go to the bathroom. If not, watch her carefully and snap the lead hard with a firm "NO!" when she does this...
Try these things and good luck, this is a hard habit to break, but the above things should at least give you a fighting chance
