13 year old wire haired terrier pees and poops everywhere

Question
We have a 13 year old terrier named Sadie.  My husband has had her since she was a pup, even bottle fed her.  She has been going to pee in the house for quite some time and pooping as well.  Her poops were very messy and runny most of the time and I suggested changing her diet to make her poop more solid and easier to clean up.  It worked, however, now she has stopped eating her food and will get into the garbage at night if I don't put it away.  The ENTIRE time my husband and I have been together she has peed and pooped in the house.  We have tried EVERYTHING. Diapers, pee pads, newspaper, taking her out frequently.  She also doesn't seem to know when she is finished with her bm.  She will put her tail down and well, you get the picture.  She only goes in the house at night when we are sleeping. So when we get up, there is poop smears all over the carpet and usually 4-6 places where she has peed.  Her poop is ALL over the carpets, never just one spot.  If we take her water up at night, she cries and whines and barks. She will also find any liquid she can in the house and drink it. Usually knocking drinks off tables and etc...  I am at my whits end.  Cleaning carpets and bathing her everyday is crazy.  I just don't know what to do.  It is just me caring for her with no help at all from my husband.  I have numerous health issues and it is difficult for me to keep bathing her and cleaning carpets everyday.  What can I do?

Answer
I would suggest you consider using a dog crate for her at night.  Even older dogs can learn to accept them if it is introduced PROPERLY and not used as punishment.

The crate can also be used at other times when you are not able to supervise the dog.
