dog heart worms (treatment options)

Question
I have 2 dogs.
1. A siberian Husky purebreed
2. A mixed smaller dog

Our husky had heartworms, we spent 800 dollars to get her treated.  Now we have hte other dog that has heartworms, with not "that" much money to treat him.  It's like 850 dollars total per treatment.  I really, really want to keep him, and want to get him treated, but I need to find cheaper options.  What options would be available, or cheaper options might be available for pet care in specifically.

I live in Smyrna Georgia, I just need a cheaper place.  Hopefully 500 maybe instead of 800, just something fair, where I can take care of my pet, and keep him, without killing myself financially.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Answer
I can empathize; we used to have a scotty, that in spite of all the required shots, still ended up with Parvo, thanks to an immune system that did not 'take' the vaccine, and a pet motel that did not require other pets to be up to date on shots. I pretty much emptied my emergency funds account for him.

I cannot advise on options to HW treatment since I am not a vet, however, I would suggest checking with the Vets on allexperts, also Alternative Vet Med. Perhaps there are rescue groups and other humane societies near you which can help by offering discount meds and treatment. I am not familiar with your area, but maybe even some schools which teach veterinary technology (or the Vet College in Athens, which I think is about an hour or so away) might have programs where you pay either in installments or at a discounted fee. While your beloved pet would be taken care of by 'trainees', these are dedicated individuals that want your pet to be cured as much as you do.

I wish you well, and hope that you can find the right treatment for your pet.
