Question
I have a redbone coonhound who is about 1 1/2 I got her from a shelter about a year ago. Whenever I have a guy friend over for dinner she gets upset only when food is on the table and he trys to sit down she will try to bite him. If the guy is standing with food she doesn't react(except to beg) She is a very sweet dog and only does with with men. I have been putting her in her kennel for a 5-10 min "timeout"
when she reacts this way however I worry she will bite hard and hurt someone. How do I handle this behavior? What would cause her to react this way?

Answer
As much as i like to see people adopt dogs from shelters, sadly sometimes they come with baggage, and I am not the best at correcting problems in older dogs.  Start with strong leadership.  The key to most behavior problems is approaching things using the dog's natural instincts. Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog. Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones. You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat. Start at http://www.dogsbestfriend.com/ For more on being top dog, see http://www.dogbreedinfo.com./topdogrules.htm

Beyond that, check with some of the people in the dog training area.  If they can't give you more help, you may have to try a private trainer or behaviorist.
