Question
Are dogs lactose intolerant, unable to properly digest milk and dairy products?  My brother, owner of a small beagle, told me this on the word of his vet and used as proof his reminder that the dogs we had as children, all mutts of one kind or another, loved their cheesy Gainesburger dog food patties and frequently sent the whole family, eyes watering, rushing out of the room due to their flatulence.  Have you heard this about lactose intolerance?  I'm a little skeptical.

Answer
It is widely accepted that dogs are lactose intolerant.  Most dogs will drink milk given a chance.  Different dogs react differently, some passing it as waste, loose stools, gas, and even throwing up.  So avoid giving your dog milk and other products with lactose.
