Question
Hello, I was recintly looking thourgh the adds in my locle newspaper only to discover that there were not one but two ads wil choclet labXborder collie pupys, one ad states that they are 7 weeks & free the other states tehy are 8 weeks and 20$, I own a ten and a half month old unspayed female black lab.... I am not gonig to breed her so am plannig on having her spayed in the near future, I love labs of all colors and I just adore border collies... I am going to call both places tomarrow for info.... my questions are....

I'm living with a friend that owns a golden retriver/yellow lab mix(she's 9 1/2 months old and spayed a few days ago), my lab and her get along great, they also don't mind the company of my mothers two bichon/shiztuz crosses which are both spayed and come to visit, Would they get along with a puppy... most likely female? Would the pup be a hassle to house break with the other dogs?

Answer
It has been my experience that you throw a bunch of young Labs together, even fairly young puppies, and they have a great time together.  They may look like they are trying to kill each other, but they are just having fun. I meet monthly with a group, and several times a year it is an informal setting with fenced yard where we can turn the dogs loose to play.  The dogs range from 2 months old up to over a year with occasional older dogs.  They all seem to get along fine.  Once in a while we do need to settle things down, but there has never been an injury.  The mix is always mostly Labs, but includes Goldens, German Shepherds, and maybe others.  The last time we had a couple of Cairn Terriers and a Beagle.

I would seriously consider a male for the new pup.  Neuter him at 6 months, and he should get along fine with the females.  You keep adding females, and you may get 2 that are both determined to be the top female.  The dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog.  Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members
outrank the 4 legged ones.  You can learn to play the role of top dog by
reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class
or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with
a treat. Start at http://www.dogsbestfriend.com/  Neutering is cheaper than spaying.  Usually it is done at 6 months just as the dog is maturing.

The other dogs will be a distraction from the attention you need to give a pup when housebreaking.  It may also be too busy playing, to stop and go to the door.  When you do take it out, all the other dogs will want to go out too,  When you come back in, you may not be done wiping all the feet before the puppy needs to go out again.  Still, the older dogs will set an example.  You will just need to remember to keep a close eye on the puppy.

Lab/BC cross.  We have friends that have one.  It had the short coat of a Lab, and the black and white markings of a BC.  Nice dog.  I am always glad to hear of people taking mixes.  There are so many nice dogs and not enough good homes. I will be happy to help you any time you ask.

If you would like a chocolate, you might look at both litters to pick the one you like the best.
