Dog cant seem to throw up

Question
Hi I know quite a bit about dogs but needed a second opinion on what to do. My dog has been fine all day and most of the night playing eating drinking and going potty and then 6 hrs ago she started attempting to trow up but nothing comes out. I tried massaging her throat, let her outside to eat grass, and checked her throat for obstructions. I was thinking of giving her a tablespoon of peroxide to help her throw it up (which I had a vet tell me to do for another dog) but wasn't sure if it would make things worse. Her behavior is normal and she's not stressed, she just can't sleep. It's not something I've come across before and wasn't sure what steps to take. Thanks so much for your time and help

Answer

Hi Nicole,

I can't say what's going on with your dog. Inducing vomiting could be the wrong thing to do, it all depends on what she's trying to expel (if something she ate is the cause of this problem). Other things which can cause a problem like this are allergic reactions, something lodged in the back of her throat (that you can't see), an intestinal blockage, and  irritation in the throat.

If this were my dog, I'd call the vet's office and let them advise you as to whether or not she needs to be seen, or what else to try at home to make the gagging stop. If this continues more than 24 hours though, don't delay in getting your dog to the vet. If this is a blockage, it's potentially dangerous.

Sorry I couldn't be more  of a help.
Best of luck,

Patti
