Question
Hello Cindi,

We have two male pembroke welsh corgis. One we got as a puppy and is now

2 years old. Last December we got a 14 month old pembroke. His owner was

dying of cancer and her friends helped to find a home for her dog.

The new guy is a very sweet and cuddly and but can become very excitable at

the drop on a pin.

The main problem we are having is when one of us leaves the house through

the front door (or when ever I try to take a shower), he freaks out, barks and

nips at whoever is shutting the door. I can calm him down a bit and make him

sit for a moment before I go out the door (if I'm offering a treat) but then as

soon as I turn to open the door, he's jumping, barking and biting me in the

rear and I can't control his actions once I'm out the door.

He also gets very exciting at feeding time and jumps and barks. He knows the

morning routine and now when I brush my teeth that tells him it is almost

time for treats because I'll be leaving the house soon, so he sits there barking

at me!

I've discovered that he is very trainable when treats are involved and can

make him "wait" almost indefinitely before I say it's okay to eat his meals. He

also is getting better at "come" as I have associated that with treats. It used
to

be if he got out the front door at all he would become very excited and start

to run off. He now will listen and come when off leash. I just don't know how

to use this with the "door" issue.

Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated!

Answer
Have a friend or spouse or someone help you with this one. Put him on leash and teach him to wait until you close the door and leave before he calmly approaches the door. Do everything just like you would if you were really leaving. And have him do walk throughs on leash until he 'gets' it right. Then reward reward reward. And repeat until he's consistent on leash. Go to off leash. When he is consisten off leash. Have the person working him leave the room when you do from another door. Work your way up to noone helping. everyone leaving. HOPEFULLY he'll get it.
Also go to alpha dog boot camp on the web. You'll love the site and learn TONS. I know I did. :)
The barking. Teach him to speak on command. Then teach him to QUIT, QUIET.,STOP or whatever. Once he learns that you'll have it licked
Good luck
