German Shepard now vomits

Question
My 5yr, male GS has recently begun to vomit yellow frothy liquid.  Beginning 2weeks ago, this appears to occur several times a day (less than 10) after strenuous activity (running the yard, excessive barking).   In addition, he seems to have a rather hard time breathing....it's a labored sound like he's out of breath.  The breathing issue also only occurs after periods of activity.  At rest, he's fine. All this is happening, but it is not slowing him down.  He still has plenty of energy and eats his dry, bagged food normally.   Other than the annoying sound of him trying to breath in his tongue and the occasional vomit, he seems completely normal. Any ideas on what could cause these symptoms?  Perhaps an allergy ?   (He's a fenced, outside dog).

Answer
Hi Steve,

Throwing up yellow frothy liquid means your dog's stomach is empty, by itself it not really a symptom of anything, but vomiting several times a day isn't normal.

If you think it's annoying hearing your dog trying to catch his breath, just think how your dog must feel!
Your dog's labored breathing is more of a concern, and your vet should examine your dog. Dogs are pretty stoic, and do not always show signs of discomfort. Even though your dog is acting fine, doesn't mean that he IS fine.

It sounds like he needs to see a doctor. This could be a heartworm infection, or a heart problem, or a pancreatic problem... or a hundred other things. Your dog deserves more than guesswork!

A trip to the vet will give you answers, and your dog will feel better for it.

Best of luck,
Patti
