Question
Hello,
I have a 3 year old Boxer who for the last week has been licking himself (genital area) much more often than usual.  During the night, he has been waking up every couple of hours to lick himself and this unlike him.  He is usually able to sleep throughout the night.  I am hesitant to call a vet because this could really be nothing.  Any suggestions?
Thanks!!!

Answer
Tracy,
It could be fleas, or it could be some kind of rash.  Check him out and see if he has red bumps or if it looks like  rash.  You can put the kind of ointment that people use for diaper rash on babies on him.  I buy the generic brand at Walmart. Rub it in real good because he will probably try to lick it off. It's really good for rashes.  It also, could possibly be just some kind of habit he has gotten used to.  You can buy a product called "Bitter Apple" that you apply to his skin, and it is extremely bitter.  There are few dogs that will lick that area after getting a bitter mouth full!  If none of these work, I would at least call the Vet, or take him in for a check up.

God Bless,
Becky
