Question
Hello
I want to buy a good bred pup for me i have some five acreas of land for it to run on and work with it.
I am wondering what would be the best breed for me to buy for working, I am most interested in Search n Rescue do to our country's manor now.
I want to enter Obedience classes first then pursue the Search n Reacue, I feel this would be most exciting to venture into now days.
I want to know what breed would best suit this for the needs of this working ability and intelligence and staminia.?
Please advise.  and Thanks ahead.

Answer
I don't want to sound like I think my favorite breed is the only one.  A few numbers, the dog guide school I volunteer for trains mostly Labs, 70 %, and the other service dog school I work with trains equal numbers of Labs and Goldens.  Many Goldens have a little softer personality and are better as a service dog for people that don't have the heart to give the dog the discipline all dogs need.  As far as I know, Labs dominate most forms of working dogs now except some security areas and herding.  They are intelligent and like to work. Fortunately for you, there are many good lines around.  There are many low quality Labs out there too.  Do not look for show champions, and field champions may not be much better for your purpose.  Do look for 5 generations of OFA certified hips and eye certification.  You will pay a premium for chocolate Labs, but they are more likely to be too hyper and have more hip problems.  Go to www.akc.org for more info on Labs and how to select a good one.

Yes obedience train the dog starting the day you pick it up.  Many people are astounded when I tell them the age of my quiet, well behaved puppy I have out somewhere.  It is true that I have access to the the very best puppies, but I train starting at 7 weeks.  Keep the sessions very short, maybe only a few repetitions at a time.
