relapse in house training

Question
We adopted a terrier mix about 2 months ago she is about 8mo old.  When we got her she seemed to already be house broken.  She only had a few accidents and has done really well.  She never urinates in the house it is always bm.  She will not do her bussiness in our master bedroom, I believe this is because that is where she sleeps at night.  However, either of the other two bedrooms she can get the door open, she will go in and do her bussiness.  We have been taking her to her mess and telling her no.  We then put her in the crate for a time and when we take out of crate take her directly outdoors.  We also reward her for doing her bussiness outdoors.  We are trying to find a way to get her to let us know when she needs to go out.  How can we convey this to her?  We also recently had her spade, I don't know if this could be part of the problem.  She has always done this, it just seems to be more often and a lot of times right after she has been outdoors.  Please help.

Thanks Elizabeth

Answer
At 8 months I am not sure they still have much warning of a bowel movement.  The recent spaying may add discomfort and urgency when a bowel movement comes.  Even when they are a couple of months old, I seldom have problems with puppies urinating in public places when I take them, but even approaching a year, I still get caught and have to clean up a bowel movement.

Since she withdraws to an unused area, it sounds like a housebreaking problem rather than a status challenge.  Punishing her after the fact does very little good.  You must catch her in the act.  Try to remember to keep the bedroom doors closed.  Keep an eye on her.  If you see her heading to the bedrooms, take her out.  You may want to use a gate or something to keep her in the same room as you.  Be very attentive to her going to the door.  If she suddenly needs a bowel movement, and she goes to the door, and you don't respond, she will have to do something.
