Bonding w/ my new dog

Question
Hello Melissa,

Thank you for taking my question.  My husband and I recently adopted a 15 mos (est. age) lab/pit mix from the humane society.  We have had him for about a week and we've really bonded  in this short period of time(my husband travels frequently so he hasn't had the opportunity yet to bond).  I'm struggling w/ a decision as to whether to take a 4-day trip (which we'd planned months before we got the dog) as I'm afraid due to his history as a rescue, he will feel like we've abandoned him and will no longer trust me.  Will my leaving on the trip damage the bond we've developed?  I want to make it as least stressful on him as possible and am trying to arrange for a relative to stay over at my house.  I leave in 4 days (my dog would have known me a short 1.5 wks by that time).  Do you have any suggestions for helping my dog cope w/ my absence (he does get manageable separation anxiety when I leave for work).  Should I board him at a doggie day care/hotel instead?

Alternatively, if you think this could really set our relationship back, I could cancel the trip and lose out on the trip money.  Your advice is appreciated!  Michelle

Answer
Michelle;
Although I know you are going to be worried, you need to go on your trip!
The best option I feel is to keep the dog busy with other stimulus...so he doesn't feel abandoned.
Sending him to a reputable "Boarding" operation aka
"Doggie Daycare" is great!
They have really great programs for the dog, and like children, when they are busy all day, they come home really happy to see Mom and Dad!!!
So, go ahead, and do this for your dog!
Best regards,
Melissa
