Question
I just brought my dog (1/2 Maltese/1/2 yorkie) home from having this procedure done on Wednesday.  This is Saturday and he is still vomiting, not eating and only drinking water.  He is urinating pretty good, getting clear and seemingly enough. But is is totally lethargic, lays down most of the time and then wanders around a little aimlessly, drinks, vomits, urinates then sleeps again.  The vet check his bladder before I brought him home yesterday afternoon and said she did not see a leak.
when I brought him home he drank and ultimately just ate ice for 2 hours solid.  Changed him over to ice as he was obsessed with liquid and was beating his dish trying to get more water. Then he just got sick then slept.

Any ideas as to what else we should be looking for or what I can do?  I have a call into the vet to determine next steps, but I really think she is stumped.  Any ideas are welcome.

Answer
Hi Kay,

Thanks for writing to me. I am so sorry that your munchkin is experiencing such a hard time.  I also do not know what the problem is. Any operation can take the wind out of one's sails, including dogs.  However, the unusual need to drink is puzzling.  I would definitely take your dog back as soon as possible and have the vet check him out for high white cell count and other possible abnormalities.  You want to catch whatever is going on now, before a crisis develops.

Additionally, if your vet can't figure out what is making your dog so sick then by all means, get a second opinion.

Best,
Shelley Davis
