pup with bloody-jelly after bowl movement

Question
My 8-10 week old Chihuahua male pup has been experiencing loose poop with a jelly like bright red blood substance afterward.  He seems to be 'pushing' extra hard during these movements.  He has had 2 out of the 4 rounds of his shots and he comes from a neighbors litter- his parents are healthy.  I had the vet check his stool for worms about 3 weeks ago because he as been scooting, but the vet said it was fine...he might have an anal gland residue #???#.  While we were in the office the vet did express the gland and got a small amount of fluid out. ??  Our pup has been eating treats within the past 24 hours.  Rawhide chewies, and small milk-bones.

He is completely normal, insanely active, eating/drinking...otherwise seemingly in perfect health.

His vitals:   1.113 lbs as of 3 days ago when we had his last round of shots....at that time had a normal temp 101.  Doesn't eat the best diet- he's been eating some blue buffalo kibble, egg, boiled chicken.

any help is greatly appreciated.

Answer

Hi Chris,

Anal gland discharge is sort of yellowish and  very smelly. It does not have any blood in it.

Bright red blood in the stool is cause for concern, especially with such a young, small puppy! Even though you were at the vet 3 days ago, things have obviously changed, and your puppy needs to be seen by the vet again. You should not delay in contacting your vet.

Anytime you think your dog is having a medical emergency (such as blood in the stool) you should contact your vet's office, not an Internet helpline. The rules of this site allow the experts to take up to 3 days to respond to questions, and it could be dangerous to wait that long before getting your puppy the care he needs.

Best of luck,

Patti
