Question
Hi, I have a German Shepherd x Kelpie who is 7 now. & a Beagle who is 2.
I am only recently having disciplinary issues with my German Shepherd, who i never had problems with before. However i am pregnant now & slower & less reactive to how i used to be, & it seems like Jake is taking great advantage of this (im sure his not - on purpose, he is every dog lovers dream) Once i would walk him off the lead all the time, ride my push bike & he would run with me, ride my horse & he would follow me, & never run off - he would think about it & begin to run off but when i would call him back he would come straight away..(this had to be restricted when we got the Beagle until i had her trained of course)
These days, if he see's a dog he runs to sniff it very fast, & as Iam watching the Beagle very closely as she is the more challenging dog im slower to react (and he will not listen to me calling him back). i absolutely blame my self as iam distracted by the Beagle & im physically slower. I feel by splitting my love & attention between the 2 dogs this may have impacted the perfection i had with my German shepherd. Anyway - im wondering if you could tell me, do you think he is to old to go to obedience school?? Im a believer that obedience school is purely to train the owner so they can effectively train their puppy/dog. However im a little worried i have "damaged" him with what would appear to be slackness in discipline. Just to add to the situation, he is not a food lover. so although of course i do use food to reward him (and i have tried every thing) when he is busy he is not interested in food at all... my Beagle loves it. But Jake the shepherd could easily take it or leave it. My Vet suggested slightly starving him. I did try this as im desperate. And he didnt care. he just seemed to get used to the smaller meals... What advice could you offer me?? many thanks.

Answer
I don't think he is too old for obedience classes,as you said they are just as much for you as they are for the dog. I think it would also be good bonding time, and the dog will respect you more and see you as the leader again. So I think the best thing to do would be to enroll him in basic classes
