How to start training after 2 years

Question
I have a 2 year old lab/husky? mix that I rescued when he was 3 months. When he was 5 months old I discovered I was pregnant. I couldn't walk him anymore as he is really strong and doesn't listen. My other kids & husband didn't take up much of the slack. Anyway because of the pregnancy, then the new baby I let him get pretty wild. He growls and snaps at strangers. He won't come when called. He will sit and lie down but won't stay. How should I go about training him after all this time?

Answer
Hi Jenny,
Believe it or not, the exact same way as you would as if he were 3 months old with one exception,  get a prong collar and halter leash.  Use both on him.  When he is snapping, pull the prong collar back and tell him to "sit".  Do it every time he snaps and growls.  When you take him for a walk and he pulls, use the halter collar and the prong collar and walk in the other directions. Do this a hundred times until he stops pulling and walks nicely... It would have been a quicker train if he was younger, but now you will have to be stronger mentally and emotionally than he is.  And he will fight you persistently because he is losing control, so you must be MORE persistent because you are GAINING control.  He is not allowed to sniff unless you say it is ok and regularly say no and go in a different direction..
The stay is more difficult for a dog.  Put him in a sit, tell him "stay" and IMMEDIATELY PRAISE HIM FOR STAYING. Do this 5 times. Next make him sit tell him "stay" and do not move your feet, but lean backwards, then immediately praise him.  Do this until he seems solid.  Next do the same and take a step back and immediately forward again and praise...VERY GRADUALLY INCREASE DISTANCE UNTIL HE IS SOLID WITH THIS,,,,ONLY THEN INCREASE TIME.
You will be happy with your new dog
