Question
Our 14 month old female german shepherd dog absolutely will not poo outside. After her feeding in the morning, we go for a walk right away. sometimes she goes, more likely not. then she has a bowel movement in her kennel. It's 6'x6'. Today we walked her five times and each time she was brought into the house she messed. When she barks or yelps to go out, she is more interested in what is going on in the neighborhood that doing her business!.We are at our witt's end. Please help or give suggestions!

Answer
Dear Tracy,
Thanks for the question. House training mistakes can be very frustrating, especially in a  6 x 6 kennel. I can help! I'm not sure Trixie's defecation is due to incomplete house training.

I'll need more detailed information before I can help. Please answer all these questions carefully. Thank you.

How long have you had Trixie (I'll call her Trixie)? Was she ever house trained? How did you teach her where to eliminate?

How long has this behavior been occurring? What have you done to correct this behavior? You didn't mention if she urinates inside. Does she? If so - where?

Does the behavior occur when you are present, when you are absent or both in your presence and absence?

If it occurs in your presence, what exactly do you do? How many times have you 'caught' Trixie defecating?

What is the consistency of Trixie's stools?

What brand of food does Trixie get?
How much at each feeding?
How often is she fed?
Does she get food treats? If so how often, how much and what type of treats?

What type of kennel? What's the flooring type in the kennel? How long has she had this particular kennel?
Exactly where is the kennel?
Has the kennel always been in this location?
Does she ever try to get out of the kennel?
Does she eat her meals in her kennel?, treats?
Is she ever left home alone outside of her kennel?
Does she bark and/or whine when you leave her?

When you come home, is her face/mouth area wet like she has been salivating?

When Trixie does defecate outside--, what is the type of ground cover where she stands? grass? concrete? gravel? Is she on a leash during outside defecation? If not, how close to you is she standing when she defecates?

Will she readily urinate outside? Will Trixie urinate while she is on a leashed walk?

Have you spoken to your vet about this? If so, did she or he run any tests, check a stool sample? If so, what were the results?

Please answer all the questions and I'll be happy to offer suggestions. Thank you.

Happy Training!
