sick dog, vomiting, no appetite

Question
My Chihuahua got really sick early yesterday morning. She has been vomiting up clear liquid, has diarrhea, and has not tried to eat anything on her own. We've done the low sodium chicken broth and pedialyte in small doses and she still loses some. She lost a lot of weight and you can see her little rib bones. She has been getting up and walking around, although obviously weak. Is there anything else that you can suggest I do to get her back to her sweet self? I'm taking her to the vet, but want to get her to at least stop vomiting.

Answer
Hi Casey,

Because your dog is so small, and because she's been losing weight for no apparent reason, and is vomiting and also has diarrhea, you need to have her examined by your veterinarian.
Please don't delay in this, such a small dog can easily develop complications because she doesn't have the reserves that a larger or more robust dog would have.

Until your dog has been seen by your vet, continue with the low sodium chicken broth or pedialyte. Offer small amounts frequently.

Best of luck,
Patti
