elderly dachshund bladder problems

Question
Hi Patti: My 13 year old male dachshund is in good health (not fat) and fairly playful for his age, but lately he's been urinating in the house, which he's never done before. It's hot, and he's drinking a lot of water. Do you think that's it, or is it an age problem? I take him out 4 times a day at regular times. What do you think?

Phil

Answer
Hi Phil,

Even "old age problems" need treatment!

Your dachshund may have a urinary tract infection, which is easily treated, but it does require a trip to the vet.

Until you can be seen by your vet, you should give your dog more frequent opportunities to go outside, so accidents in the house can be avoided. Don't withhold water from him, if Kidney disease is suspected withholding water would be dangerous.

Best of luck,

Patti
