Question
I have a 13 month old chi-nursing 3 week old puppies. She is great!  Last night I noticed a swollen teet, very tender.  I took her to the vet hospital, the doc who was incredibly busy with 2 seperate pairs of wounded dogs from 2 seperate fights, quickly confirmed infection, in the 3 hours I was there a fever started... we left with Clavamox, and puppy formula...  the doc said to seperate them from mom...  1 1/2 hours later the vet-tech said, my dog
could nurse them after the week of antibiotic...?  My dog wants in the box with her puppies, and the puppies of course would rather not use the bottle-help??  P.S. doc says they urinate/def on their own when their eyes open, but she is still very insistant on stimulating this event... their eyes opened on their 2 week b-day.

Answer
Janice, I think you need to call and find out for sure whether or not your dog can go back in with the puppies. If the doctor said one thing and the vet tech said another, I would want to verify how the vet tech came about his/her answer - whether the doctor told him/her to tell you that or if s/he was giving you his/her own advice.

Did the vet tell you if it was mastitis? Sometimes the puppies can be allowed to continue nursing and sometimes they cannot, depending on the type of infection. My best advice to you is to call your vet and speak directly to him/her.
