Question
i have a Chihuahua mix who is about to turn 17. me and my family are torn about what to. She is constantly crying or whimpering and lost her hearing and is nearly blind. she hasn't been eating often and keeps getting random sores all over her body and face they itch and hurt her. we don't want to put her to sleep we want her to do it on her own but how do i know when its time to help her do it?

Answer
Dakota-

No one can tell you when to let a beloved family member go. That is only your decision. However, she may be clinging to life, only because she knows you dont want to let her go.

Normally, in rescue, we say that if a dog is in A)incurable pain or B) stops wanting to survive (IE stops eating and drinking) its time to cross the bridge.

With her not eating, blind and nearly deaf, constantly crying and whimpering because she is in pain.... if she were mine, I would have her uthenized. She seems to be asking you to help her relieve her pain.

I'm sorry, the loss of a pet is never easy. Just remember all the wonderful times you had with her, and think of how happy she will be across the bridge without that old, broken down body to imprison her on earth.
