New Dog?

Question
My husband is pushing a dog on our family.  Its him, me, and a 5yr old boy and 4 cats.  I have never had one and he says it wouldnt be a problem.  The only dogs Ive ever "tolerated" were retreivers or labs.  We travel often and are pretty active with our lifestyle.  He thinks it would enhance the family and give our son a sense of responsibility.  He said he wants a 35# or so size.  What would you suggest? Ive seen pix of the King Charles and they seem cute.

Answer
Dear D,
Thanks for the question.  You and I seem to agree that a dog is a huge responsibility.  There are many many reasons to adopt or "not adopt" a dog.

I'll be blunt. Dogs can enhance or disrupt a family.  . . . . . .I've met many 5-year old children, . . . . .not thousands and thousands, or hundreds and hundreds, but more than 20. In my opinion 5-year old children can get a "full dose" of responsibility with a pet fish (smile).

There are many traits to consider before you choose a dog.  Size and Appearance are very general traits. Do you want a dog that needs regular grooming?  Is the dog going to spend most of his time inside the house?
