Old dogs pooping in their bed/room at night

Question
We have two mini dauchunds, one is 16 the other 15. We keep them in the house during the day, and in a room off our carport at night. They go to the door when they want out during the day, only occasionally having an accident in the house, we always take them out before bedtime. The problem is they poop all night long, in their beds, on the floor! Everyday we have to get up and wash all their bedding, them and the floor - PLEASE HELP - my husband and I dread waking up and facing that mess first thing every morning!

Answer
These are very old dogs, and old dogs don't always have a lot of control. That is a simple fact of life.

However, "pooping all night long" is not normal, so I would investigate that more. Make sure that they are not fed after 5pm (try feeding them once a day in the morning only), and take in some stool specimens to make sure that they don't have any parasites. I would also stand outside with them to make sure that they have indeed eliminated before bringing them back in for the night. Papers could be spread down over the floor to help with the cleanup, but it might be better to crate them closer to your sleeping area so that you can hear them when they need to go outside during the night.

Having old dogs to care for is as much, if not more, work than having puppies.
