Bottlefeeding

Question
I purchased a puppy yesterday from an individual. I took it to my vet immediately to make sure it was okay. I found that it was NOT 7wks. like they said but rather between 3 and 4 weeks of age. I went back to return her and they refuse to come to the door. The baby only has two little canine teeth that have broken through. She is supposed to be a dachshund/beagle mix. I have tried bottle feeding which she would not do. I am now feeding her about 1 oz of hartz puppy replacement milk every 3 1/2 hours by letting her lap/inhale from a saucer. It is hard getting her to eat unless it is closer to 5 hours apart. Am I feeding too often? Should I try mixing the formula with canned food to see if she does better like that? Her tongue is also dry feeling, but she urinates about 6 times in 12 hours. I was wondering if she isn't getting enough for proper hydration. I called my vet to ask and was informed she is out of town until Monday morning. Please help.

Answer
I'll try. You can pinch a bit of skin between your thumb and forefingers right where her collar would go on the back of her neck. If it sticks together and goes down slowly then she needs more hydration. Try pedialyte rather than water. It'll up her electrolytes rather than just filling her tummy with water.
She is too old to switch over to bottle feeding, so you're doing the right thing with the saucer feeding. She WILL eat when she's hungry so, let her regulate that. If she's fine with every five hours then great, just make sure she has plenty of liquids down to drink in between. Get a good quality dog food, no by products, corn, wheat, or soy, try Wellness or FlintRiver, or Natural Balance. Nothing you can buy at wally world or the grocery store will work for any dog.
Please let me know how she's doing :)
