Question
Hello, Jack is my first dog since I moved from my parents house, I adopted him from the local shelter and that day I knew he would be a hand full. When I went to get him from his kennel he immediately flipped out as in yelping and crying. when I got him home he didn't come out from behind the couch all that night and very little the next day. He is very shy of men and I am the only one who can handle or even touch him. I have had him a little over 4 months now and he has only improved a very little bit. I would think he was abused or just never socialized. he sits fine ...but will not stay. Am I the issue or is it something else Sincerely Faith G.

Answer
He probably was never socialized, and as you said possibly abused as well

I think you have to get him used to things, but slowly, like have a male friend come over, and have him off the dog a treat, even if he just puts it's on the ground for the dog-that is a start then as he accepts that, have the friend try to get the dog to eat out of his hand, but don't try to touch him, just get him used to that for a long time and even then just start with letting the dog sniff

You can slowly do this with a number of people,I think that would be better for him to get used to a few people that he will get to know, rather then a bunch of strangers-as it may overwhelm him and even set him back
