Some hours ago, my 11-year-old black lab came to greet me when I was walking through the door. He was as energetic as usual, but when he stepped on his right paw, he yelped and doubled over. He then limped over beside the couch and has been there ever since. When I checked him over, he wouldn't let me touch his right ankle. He even snapped at me when I tried. He had never done that before. I've noticed that he clenches his toes together. I just gave him some Aspirin, and it seems to be working. Please tell me what probably happened, and what I can do.

Answer
Hi Emily,

It's impossible to guess at what may have happened during the time your dog was home alone, but it's obvious that he's in significant pain now.

You need to take your dog to the vet for an examination. If a broken bone is suspected, x-rays may need to be taken. If this is arthritis, there are better pain medications than aspirin.

Please don't delay in getting your dog the care he needs!

Patti
