breeding dog with Lyme Disease

Question
I'm trying to find research anywhere about breeding a female dog that has been diagnosed with Lyme Disease.  I purchased a dog in Germany a few months ago that just contracted Lyme disease.  I cannot seem to find any research on this topic and thought that perhaps with your background on breeding, you might either know whether or not this can be passed onto her puppies (my vet doesn't know) or who might be an expert in this field.  Thank you for any/all help!

Answer
The first thing I would do would be to put this bitch on lyme antibiotics (probably doxyclycline) for at least four to five weeks. Talk to your vet about this. http://www.2ndchance.info/lyme.htm

I have found some human studies, and there seems to be some evidence of potential problems in some fetuses if the mother is infected during pregnancy. Your veterinarian will most likely be interested in this link: http://www.geocities.com/HotSprings/Oasis/6455/pregnancy-special-abstracts.html  Oh! I see one of the abstracts is about dogs. It seems that the bacteria did infect some of the fetuses. (about halfway down that page)

Here is another one that says there is NO transmission! http://bakerinstitute.vet.cornell.edu/cahrc/Lyme.htm (ARRRRGGGGHHHH!!! Time to flip a coin, I guess.)

http://www.ento.psu.edu/lyme/symptoms.htm  Apparently, "The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) maintains a registry of pregnant women with Lyme disease to advance the understanding of the effects of Lyme disease on the developing fetus." Your vet might be interested in contacting the CDC for more information.

Sorry I cannot be of more help to you... but everything I have read says to put the dog on "long-term" antibiotics. That should be your first order of business.
