Puppys peeing gets more often in the evening

Our Jack Russell puppy is five months old. (We also have a 7-yr.-old Jack
Russell).  We have been housetraining the puppy and it is going slow, but
well.  He is in the crate when we are not at home (never longer than 3-4
hours) and has been holding it when in there.  He is also going outside on a
fairly regular basis.  His pooping is not scheduled AT ALL, even tho we only
feed him around 7 AM and 6 PM--the times he poops are not regular.  
However, we are working on that.  My problem is that, for example, last night
he was in his crate for 3-1/2 hours.  We took him outside when we got home,
and he peed FOREVER.  But, within one hour, I found pee on my kitchen floor;
cleaned that up, and within the next 15 minutes, caught him peeing in the
family room.  Why is he peeing so often at night? (after 6 PM)?  He only goes
every 2-3 hours during the day, but his peeing at night is much more often.

Elimination is highly related to exercise.  I have found that if I grab my puppy that has been laying around the house and go out, it can make it about from the parking lot to the back of Wal-Mart before having a bowel movement.  So, I park near the store, walk out to the grass at the edge, let it go, and walk back to the store giving it one more chance at the little landscape area near the door.  Not fool proof, but maintains our welcome.  

One big advantage of the crate is restricting activity, allowing even fairly young puppies to go 4-5 hours.  Activity in the evening brings more frequent urination's.  I have material covering the signs a puppy needs to go out and learning to communicate with it about when it needs to go.  following it should help.
