vaginal discharge in dogs

Question
My 5 year old loso-pekin has a vaginal discharge, she rubs across the carpet and licks constantly causing redness and irritation. What is causing this problem?

Answer
Hey Shirley. I would bring her to the vet ASAP. She could have a few things going on. If she isn't spayed, then she could possibly have a "pyometra". This is where the uterus gets infected & the dog has to be spayed immediately. This is a very serious situation. The second might be that she just has a vaginal infection. Little, furry dogs will get this sometimes. This can be easily fixed with some antibiotics. Please bring her soon so your vet can figure out what's wrong. Thanks!
