Question
Hi.

I have a six-year-old pit bull.  At a former residence she lived out side and unfortunately at mostly "people food" and very little dog food.  Now, she is an inside dog and not fed "people food" at all.  She will eat any kind of treat, she tries to get in the garbage for scraps, she will even grab food out of your hand, but she will not consistently eat any type of dog food.  We have tried nearly every brand, dry, canned, and otherwise, there is.  She will eat it pretty well for the first two or three days, if she really likes it she might go for a week, but after that she might eat five or six bites and then stop.  We have tried not feeding her treats and that makes no difference at all.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

Answer
She has you very well trained LOL. Dogs are wonderful at that. Just like children they learn to really manipulate. You won't like my answer, but you have to get tough with her., Purchase a good quality premium food from a pet store, nothing from the grocery store or a discount store like wal mart. Make sure it has no by products, no wheat,. no soy, and no corn. With no fillers it will take less to fill her up , she will poop less , and in the end the cost will be less. Flint River, Eagle Pack. Canidea.,Wellness, Natural Balance are all good choices, Chicken Soup for the pet lovers soul is decent too. Put her food down in the morning, leave it down for about twenty minutes, take it up. No additives., no canned food., no treats. no people food, and no comments. Just put it down, leave it and ignore her, either she eats or she doesn't. In the evening,. do the same. NO LONGER than twenty minutes and NO COMMENT don't' even look at her whether she eats or not. She'll do ok, then like you said after a few days she will try to exert pressure to get you to play her I'm gonna starve please baby me game. Ignore her., continue your routine of feeding. She may really not eat well for awhile, maybe even a week but she WILL eat., she will NOT starve herself no matter how much she would like for you to do that. When she is under control and eating you can extend her eating time up to forty five minutes. But that's it. Stick with a good dog food and she'll do fine :)
Aren't they INCREDIBLY smart???
