Question
I am still learning and I'd like to understand about points in show. My 7 months old Chihuahua female went to her first show weekend. Here is the show result so far...

1/W/OS
1/W/OS
1/R
1/W/0S
3 MAJORS RESERVE

I know W means Winners. OS means Best Opposite of Breed (to Best of Breed). R means Reserve. RW means Reserve Winners. BB means Best of Breed. 3 Majors Reserve (it means she didn't get 3 points but could have).

I want to know if she does actually get any points so far? Based on her 5 shows, I know a dog can get points only if it is Winners Dog or Winners Bitch either. But she did get OS and W. So what is up with that?

Thanks!

Answer
A dog must actually defeat another dog of the same sex in order to get points... the exception being if it was the only one of its sex in the classes and then went Best of Winners (BW) over multiple dogs of the opposite sex... then it would "match" the other sex's points. A singleton entry could also get points by going BOS over Specials (Champions) of the same sex.

The number of points each day is dependent on the number of dogs actually showing that day, and in what part of the country the show is located. Point Schedules are revised every year in May: http://www.akc.org/events/conformation/point_schedule.cfm

A judging program will say something like (5-3-2-0). This means that there are 5 class dogs, 3 class bitches, 2 dog Specials, and 0 bitch Specials entered on that particular day.

One can keep track of his points by registering at the AKC Online Store, and checking under "Points and Awards" section: http://www.akc.org/shop/index.cfm?nav_area=online_store

Here is a good beginner resource: http://www.akc.org/events/conformation/beginners.cfm

One good rule of thumb in showing dogs (if you won that day) is to *ALWAYS* check the yellow judge's sheets at the Superintendent's table before leaving. Sometimes judges make mistakes, and you wouldn't want to discover later that your dog's point(s) went to someone else's dog!
