Basset puppy, potty issue?

Question
Hello Patty
We are owners of a 4yr old mixed breed (adopted at 12w) and just adopted a 9w old Basset Hound that was the victim of a puppy mill one week ago (she's 10 weeks now).

Potty training is going along well, but yesterday she went "number 2" at least 20 times throughout the day. Previously, she had gone 3-5 times per day. Her puppy chow has not changed, but she has stolen a few bites from our other dog's bowl before we could catch her.

She's not drinking excessively, nor acting ill in any other way. The feces is a bit loose, but not runny. She's up-to-date on shots, but has not been to our vet--the foster home said she wasn't due until early January.

Does this sound problematic? Should we be worried?

Thank you :)

Answer
Hi Nicole,

Because this all happened after you saw your puppy eating some of your other dog's food, it's possible that the food had too much roughage, and caused the frequent bowel movements.

If this continues to be a problem after 24 hours, then it's time to have her examined by your veterinarian. This is close enough to early January, when she's due to go back for a vet exam, and there's always the possiblity of worms when a puppy develops soft bowel movements, or diarrhea.

Best of luck,
Patti
