Question
My husband and I have had Dakota, a male Austrailian Shepard since he was 12 weeks, he is now 7 years old. Just recently we brought home Sierra, a female Transylvainian Hound (10 weeks old), both are fixed. Once in awhile Dakota will play with her, but afterwards he will not want anything to do with her. Sierra will go and sit or lay by him and he will get up and move to the other side of the room!
We have not been neglecting Dakota at all since Sierra has come home; if anything he has been a bit more spoiled lately.
She isn't completely housetrained but getting very close. She decided to relieve herself on his bed which seemed to seal the deal of a rival.
Dakota gets along fine with our friends' dogs, but they are not around so frequently.
Other than this, Dakota is a wonderful dog! We have no problems with his behavior in any other area.
Do you have any tips for teaching them to get along?

Answer
Hi Kristen,  You can not teach them to get along.  they have to work this out amongst themselves.  He is acting that way because his leadership is threatened in his mind by her coming onto his turf, so he basically has to work it out with her.  There is nothing you can do.  Just let them do their thing and they will work out the pecking order as she grows up.  He may be indifferent with her at first, or may growl at her to keep her in her place and show his dominance over her.  Hope this helps,

Dawn
