introducing new puppy

Question
so i just got a 7 week rotti and im trying to introduce her to my 1 year and 8 month old boxer. now upon first meet, my boxer was excited, went up to her sniffed her gently, stubb wagging, making me very proud at how well behaved she was being...when all of a sudden my rott, diamond, just went off yelping and yipping like someone had attacked her! she ran into the corner and snapped at me when i tried to pull her out. the rest of the day was pretty much the same. when ever hershey, my boxer, walks by diamond, diamond yelps like hershey bit her and backs up. hershey was fine with her, but now its like she has an attitude with her because of how shes acting. I think she also now realized that diamond isnt just a house guest, but a resident as she had a major attitude when diamond got in the bed to sleep with us....
are these two EVER going to get along? i am now in love with both of them and i would  hate to have them act like this forever. is there anything i can do to ease the transistion?

Answer

Hi Jamie,

You should keep your older dog's life as "normal" as possible, and stick to his or her regular routine.  This includes having your older dog sleep with you. Because your puppy isn't housetrained, she should be crated or contained over night, and not be sleeping in your bed, just yet.

Dogs do feel jealously. Be sure to give your older dog daily one-on-one attention. This means walks, grooming, play, and car rides. She needs to see that she still matters to you. Also be sure to have one-on -one play with the puppy, as well as playtime with both dogs together.

Your older dog will get used to the puppy, but that adjustment might take a month or longer.

Best of luck,
Patti
