Question
My 3 year old hound mix keeps peeing on my bedroom carpet.  Can you tell me how I can thoroughly clean the carpet and what I might do to prevent this from happening.  I let her in and out many times during the evening which is when she goes.

Answer
Hi Jeff,

You didn't say if your dog is housetrained.
Have you had your dog checked for a urinary tract infection?  If your dog has been reliably house trained until now, the chances are pretty good that there is a medical cause for her problem.
Urinary tract infections are not uncommon in female dogs, and it would cause her to have to relieve herself often. Many times it also causes the dog to have accidents in the house.

For cleaning your carpet, first treat the areas using equal parts white vinegar and water. Once the vinegar solution has dried, use an enzymatic cleaner, such as  Natures Miracle on the spots. You probably will need to treat the carpet a few times if the urine has soaked down to the padding. You can find Natures Miracle at pet stores.

You can try limiting your dog's access to the area that she repeatedly soils. Try using a child-gate to keep her out of carpeted areas. If you can't monitor her, crating her or using a child-gate to keep her in one room will also prevent her from soiling.

I hope I've been a help.
Best of luck,

Patti
