Question
hi, i have been receiving conflicting opinions on orijen.i have a 6 1/2 month old lab 38.6 lbs i am feeding him orijen large breed puppy food...some say it has too much protein.also when is a lab full grown? can you give me an approx size my dog will be at full grown

Answer
The percentage protein in a dog chow is highly misleading.  Those chows using lower quality proteins must use more protein and less carbohydrates.  The unneeded protein is them burned as energy.  Unfortunately even the large breed puppy chows are too rich designed to promote excessive growth stressing developing joints.  The best solution is a simple, early switch to adult chow.  I am familiar with a number of service dog schools, and they are all highly successful doing so.  I am unfamiliar with Orijen.  Likely the adult version would be OK.  Although they get there different ways, most dog chows are largely the same.

The most important thing is to keep the growing dogs lean.  Your dog definitely should be narrower at the waist than the hips and chest. You should be able to easily feel the ribs, but not see them.  Each dog is different.  Standard recommendations are a good place to start, but each dog must have its food and exercise adjusted to its individual needs. How much Labs grow after 6 months varies.  Some quit growing then, and some enter a growth spurt.  He may continue to grow into his second year, but it will be very slow.
