The average length of time that a bitch is in season is 21 days, but some can go a bit longer. Consequently, the bitch should be confined and closely watched for at least four weeks to insure that she is not bred. She will be trying to get to the boys as much as they will be trying to get to her.

If you don't plan on breeding her down the road, have her spayed about a month after she comes out of heat as it will cut down her chances of mammary cancer later in her life.
