Question
We had a Lab for 14 years and he passed 2 years ago.  We are now considering getting a puppy.  We loved the lab but would like something different this time around.  I have 2 children (13 and 15).  We would like a smaller dog, one that doesn't really shed, and one that would be good for inside.  Also, one that could be easily crate trained.

We were thinking about maybe a minature dachshund?????

Answer
Thanks for your question Vickie.
I think your children are at the ages where they are responsible enough to care or help care for a family dog. Other than this I don't know much else, so a mini Dachshund could or could not be a good choice. If you want a small dog(minis are QUITE small), that can be crate trained easily this can be one of many breeds. I'm guessing a dog that doesn't require much grooming, so other breeds I could reccomend would be a boston terrier(frisky but easily excersized dogs), short-caot chihuahua(not all are yappy, and very smart when trained), Chinese Crested(which require sunscreen and other skin care), Italian Greyhound(Very small, quiet, but delicate dogs), Mini Pinscher(great dogs but hard to find a repuatable breeder), or a Pug(can have skin problems, otherwise great little dogs).
As I previously stated, I would need to know more about your lifestyle to reccomend a shorter list. How active your family is, how often the dog would be alone, ect. If you like you can give me some more info and I can help you narrow down the choices a bit. As of now, these are my picks. All awesome little dogs in the right home.

I hope I've helped, Emily
