Question
Our goldendoodle was 9 weeks old when we got her.  We have socialized Bella with other dogs, humans etc.  She goes to parks everyday walking where other people are and she is at playgrounds with kids since we got her(we have three children our selves and friends). She has met new people and been exposed to many new situations (cabin with others around, camping, hiking).  To this day she has been socialized almost everyday.

When we first went to pick her up, she barked a little and backed up.  But then she was okay.  I thought that maybe she learned it from another dog that she was with.  After that she has slowly increased barking at others (dogs and people). First, sign of barking I would say "leave it" or "no bark" followed by being reinforced with treats etc.(when not barking)everytime.  Some places I did not have treats and she would continue to do it.

Next, we used a spray bottle.  We have used a spray bottle with water everytime she is barking on a walk etc. Methods work at the time to change her behavior, but does not seem to end it all together.

This weekend we had two families come over and she seemed to be at her worst.  She started barking at them when they got here and continued to bark for 2 hours in between calming down.  We finally put her in quiet time( a little pen area).  But when each quest would walk by she would bark at them for no reason.  They were not going into her space or anything. Please help.

I heard that Turid Rugaas was a good book but which one?

-Thanks so much

Carrie

Answer
I think the best way to correct this is to take her to obedience classes-as a trainer can see how she is acting, and the best method that will work on her,as each situation/dog requires something different.

And as for Turid Rugaas I have read both 'My dog pulls. what should I do?' and 'don't shoot the dog' both are very well written and good for basic training
