Puppy from Pet Store Pooping in Kennel

Question
We purchased a 4 month old Maltese puppy from a pet store. I had a larger crate and put him in it and he pooped in it and jumped all over and got it everywhere. I then tried leaving him in the bathroom with his bed, toys etc. He pooped in there and jumped in it and had it all over the bathroom. I got a small cat carrying kennel and everyday when I come home for lunch he has pooped and jumped all around in it. I take him out in the morning. He pooped this morning before I left. I don't put anything in the kennel with him. I tried leaving a toy in there, but that didn't seem to matter. He still pooped. He will go potty outside and I reward him with praise and a treat when he does. But he also goes in the house and doesn't seem to care where he goes. He is a sweet loving pet, but giving him baths every day and cleaning his kennel is getting really old. Any suggestions?

Answer
This will be tough problem to solve.  He likely is continuing theway he has lived most of his 4 months.  Was he shut up in a cage with wood chips in the store?  I am not sure how they keep puppies clean enough to sell.  Another approach would be a grid.  They are available with the crates, but expensive and hard to find. A piece of closely spaced wire closet shelving from a home supply place is cheaper.

Take it out on leash.  Walk around.  They can only walk and hold it so long.  When it finally has to go, lavish praise on it.  A combination of reducing the mess in the crate when you must leave him, praise for outside bowel movements, and careful supervision should eventually solve the problem.

When you are around you need to keep a close eye on the dog. Use closed doors or gates to keep it in the same room as you are, and perhaps as I do, a short chain fastened to the computer desk. If you catch it in the act, give it a sharp ''Ah, ah, ah!'' and take it out.
