Question
I have a 10 year old staffy and I was rubbing her belly one day and noticed my hand felt a little wet.I squeezed her nipple a bit and some whitish liquid came out.I can guarantee you she is not pregnant and was just wondering if I should be concerned about it or if it may just be a part of her heat cycle.
thank you for your time and have a great day.

Answer

Hi Lisa,

Breast discharge is not part of a dog's heat cycle. If your dog is having breast discharge, she's either late term pregnant, is having a false pregnancy (a hormonal condition), or is having a mammary infection (which can be life threatening).

Dogs do not have a menopause as human women experience. They can get pregnant for their entire life span. Being 10 years old, your dog is well past the point when it's healthy for her to have puppies. If there is a possibility of your dog ever becoming pregnant, she should be spayed.

You should have your dog examined by your veterinarian to find out what's going on her.

Best of luck,
Patti
