ANSWER:
Hi Sandeep,

A puppy can have it's first heat cycle anytime between 6 months and 1 year of age. Probably the average is around 7 months old. Now, before she has her first heat cycle has begun is the ideal time to spay a puppy! Your dog will gain the most in health benefits if you do not delay in having her spayed before her heat cycle starts, though you can spay a dog at any age. Keep in mind, a dog does not have a menopause as a human does, and can have puppies during her entire life, though breeding after the age of six is generally considered to be irresponsible and unhealthy for the dog.

Your concerns are justified. Once your dog goes into heat, dogs from miles around will be attracted to her, and breeding will be inevitable.  Male dogs are extremely persistent and quite determined to breed once they smell a female dog in heat. The only way to prevent this is to have your dog spayed, or to keep her inside during her heat cycle. Keep in mind, the cycle lasts 21 days on average, and the dog is receptive to breeding when the bleeding stops. This will happen twice a year on average, so it's entirely possible your dog will be "accidently" bred twice a year unless you take steps to prevent this!

I urge you to do the responsible thing, and have your dog spayed without delay.

Best of luck,

Patti

QUESTION: thank you very much Patti sir
Can my Pomeranian breed with dogs of other varieties. What are the chances that dogs of other varieties get attracted towards her during her periods.

Answer

Hello again, Sandeep

Dogs of ANY breed (including mixed breeds) can breed with every other dog, no matter their size or breed. This means that all male dogs, no matter if they pure bred or mixed breed dogs are going to be STRONGLY attracted to your dog once she goes into heat. This is an absolute, and getting pregnant during her very first heat cycle is an extremely probable event. For this reason, if your dog is an "outside" dog, you must bring her indoors until her heat cycle is complete.

Female dogs should not be bred before they're two years old, they aren't mature enough to be good mothers.

There are two medications, Mibolerone (Cheque Drops) and Megestrol Acetate (Ovaban) used to prevent dogs from coming into heat, should you want to breed your dog at a later date, these would be options to consider. You'd need to get either of these medications from your veterinarian, they need to be administered before the dog goes into heat, so don't put off seeing your vet about this.

I hope I've been a help,

Patti
