Question
Hi,

I have a 3 year old English Pointer who has always been pretty skinny. I have tried everything to put weight on him even keeping him in his pin all day and just let him out at night. He's the most active dog I have ever seen. He runs miles every day and you will hardly ever see him laying down. It's embarrassing when people come over because they think he never eats. Which he's always doing. Do you have any suggestions? Some people say it's their breed that those kind of dogs are skinny. Please advise.
Thanks
Beth

Answer
Hi Beth,  Yes they are a lean breed, but to play it safe, you can have a blood test run on him and rule out a thyroid or diabetes problem.  Some of your sporting breeds do tend to get diabetes especially.  If he runs a lot, he is probably burning it off.  You would want to keep him on a higher protein diet like Eukanuba so he can reabsorb the protein he is burning off every day.  Eukanuba was designed for sled dogs to keep their weight up since they ran miles a day.  Only use this food if he is truly running miles a day because it is a higher protein diet, which is harder on the kidneys.  Hope this helps,

Dawn
