grooming shih tzu

Question
I have two Shihtzus, one is 1yr. the other is 5months. I have had a wonderful groomer but she has moved. I have tried several groomers and have not be satisfied. Also I work out of town and getting my dog to the groomer and the expense of groomer every three weeks is an issue. I keep my dogs in a modified full coat. The coat is full except for the face and head. I am strongly considering learning how to groom them. How could I go about learning this skill? I am not interested in going into the business, just grooming my own dogs. I would appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks,
Pam Smith

Answer
First of all, I know its difficult to find a new groomer. However, skipping around and giving each one shot at it is not going to work either. It's best to find one that you think has good intentions, treats your dogs well, and work with them. Take some pictures along of how you like your dogs to look. When you go in to pick up the dogs, be honest. If you don't like how short she went, tell her. Say "next time could you leave the leg hair longer, but take more off her beard"..have the groomer take some notes for her next grooming. After a few times, you guys should be able to get it right.

As far as learning to groom your own dogs... you could call around to some groomers and ask if they will help you learn your particular breed. Be prepared to pay for the help, but there should be someone out there willing to help you. I have done it for a few people. Also, be prepared..you will need the proper equipment which is not cheap, and honestly, its not easy.  Good Luck
