Shih tzu anal gland

Question
Hello, I recently had both our Shih tzu's groomed with a new groomer.  The female seems to be fine but the male dog has acted strangely since then.  It was a week ago and he still takes a few steps and sits down.  He used to eat standing up now he will eat sitting.  My question is can they clean anal glands to rough? Is it possible he could have an infection from having his glands cleaned? He also has started chewing on his hind feet? His appetite is not what it used to be.  If he is not better soon, I will take him to a vet I am just unfamiliar with how they clean the glands.  Any help will be appreciated.  Thank you, Vicki

Answer
Hi Vicki,

I've never heard of a dog developing an infection from having it's anal glands expressed, but it's totally possible that he's sore back there from the process, if it was done too forcefully. It is a delicate area after all.

Chewing on his feet can mean that something is lodged between his toes, a bug bite, a reaction to something- such as lawn chemicals or carpet cleaner etc.
Check between your dog's toes for foreign matter between his toes, and to see there if there is inflammation. It can help to wash the feet with a mild soap. Dry the feet well.

Since your dog seems to be sore since the last time he had his glands expressed, and he's also having some kind of a problem involving chewing his back feet, and also not eating as he should, it probably would be be a good idea to have your vet examine him sooner, not later.

Best of luck,
Patti
