Question
Hi there. Me and my girlfriend recently bought a 10 week old Maltese and I live in a high rise condo on the 11th floor. The first 2 weeks we have been using pee pee pads and he is doing very well with them. He usually pees and poops on them. We put him in the crate when we go out and at bed time, and he has never peed or pooped in there. But we want to teach him to go to the bathroom outside. We have walked him a few times and he has yet to pee or poop outside, he just smells the grass and trys to eat other poop ( he has eaten his own poop a few times before). So what is the best way to get him to go away from pee pee pads so that he will go outside. Is 10 weeks too early to teach him? If not, what is the best way. Thanks.

Answer
Hello, Its never to early to outdoor potty train a dog...within reason I outdoor trained all my dogs from the first day home that would be from 12 weeks, 7 weeks and 7 1/2 weeks of age without problems. I am giving a link to my website there you will find info on potty training. You can easily convery from pads to outdoors when he is young but if you wait until he is older he will be much harder to teach this. http://www.freewebs.com/dustycovens/housebreakingyourpooch.htm

best of luck, And also when you take him out to pee keep him on a 4 foot leash this way you can control him whereever he is and he wont be allowed to touch other dogs poop....he can get very sick from doing so since he hasnt completed his shots yet. You can buy varius products to prevent your dog eatting its own fecal mater.
