Leash walking, instead of leash dragging

Question
I have a yellow lab that is 2 months old, and every time i try and take him for a walk with his leash he flattens his body out and it becomes we pulling him along the ground.  I thought he would start walking after a little bit, but instead he seems to prefer to choke to death.  What can I do to get him moving with the leash?

Answer
Hi Dustin;
A long time ago, bfopre I learned how to properly train dogs, I put a leash on a pup, and gave it a little tug.
He was too young, and I scared him to death.
After I saw what I had done, and tried to gentle him into it, I was NEVER able to get him to like a leash.
It took a lot of work and a long time to get him to do anything but lie down and be dragged.
This could be the problem with your pup.
I took classes, and learned that first you put a collar on them, let them have some days or a week or so to get used to that, then put a short leash on them, and just let them drag it arounf for awhile a few times a day to get them used to it. Then you work into picking it up, but not necessarily walking with it, just follow then a little bit.
In other words, you get them used to the thing around their neck, and then feeling restricted withoiut feeling threatened.
At this point, you should take him to puppy class.
If you have a Man's BVest Friend in your area, they have such classes. Petsmart and Petco have group obedience classes. Whether or not they have puppy classes for very young puppies, depends on the individual trainer.
I would check into those classes.
If you have none of those facilities, your Veterinarian should be able to tell you of classes available in your area.
